Lecture by Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska, Governor of the National Bank of Macedonia

Students from the University American College Skopje had the extraordinary opportunity to attend a powerful lecture delivered by Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska, Governor of the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia and honorary member of Delta Mu Delta – Pi Alpha chapter. The event’s opening remarks were delivered by Venera Krliu, PhD, UACS Vice-Rector for Education.

In her address on “Gender (In)equality and Economic Potential – What is the Current Situation and What Should We Strive For?”, the Governor highlighted how globalization has contributed positively to gender equality, as countries with higher trade openness show greater inclusion of women in the labor force, and according to a World Bank report, export-oriented firms employ significantly more women – with women representing one-third of their workforce, compared to less than one-fourth in non-exporting firms. A figure even higher in foreign-owned companies and those involved in global supply chains. However, she also warned that deglobalization trends could pose a threat, not only potentially reducing global GDP by up to 12% but also disproportionately affecting women’s employment opportunities. Achieving meaningful progress, she stated, requires substantial reforms – removing institutional, regulatory, and cultural barriers and implementing policies that support women’s labor market participation, work-life balance, and access to leadership opportunities.

The lecture concluded with an engaging Q&A session where students discussed the Governor’s career journey, the challenges of her role, and the current global economic shifts – including the effects of U.S. tariffs on local economies and foreign investment.

This lecture was not just informative, but a strong call to action, with UACS and Delta Mu Delta – Pi Alpha grateful for the Governor’s insights and ongoing commitment to driving meaningful change!
