On 23 Feb 2021, Dr. Claudia Stoian from the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania, was a guest speaker at the UACS School of Foreign Languages within the Contrastive Analysis undergraduate course, taught by the Dean, Prof Dr Marjana Vaneva. Dr Stoian, who teaches Translation and Culture courses in the Faculty of Communication Sciences at her home university, addressed the students on the topic of Compliments across cultures. Since the lecture spanned from Contrastive Analysis to Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics, the English language undergraduate and postgraduate students attended the virtual class and actively participated in the discussion afterwards. Since students from different nationalities and cultures were present, and were keen on sharing their experiences, the class was a truly linguistic one – multilingual, multinational and multicultural.
