Shakespeare

This course is designed to introduce students to Shakespeare’s works. It offers a study of Shakespeare as a playwright, including critical approaches and interpretation of selected plays and sonnets. The course will start with an introduction to Elizabethan theatre and the social and cultural context in which the works of Shakespeare were written. Then student will be involved in critical interpretation of major plays exemplifying the genres of comedy, history play, tragedy, ‘problem play’ and romance. A few sonnets will also be analysed. Textual analysis will be complemented by discussions both on selected films and performances currently available in local theatres.
