Theory and History of Diplomatic Relations

This course provides advanced graduate students with a survey of international relations history with a focus on European diplomatic history from 1618 through 1945. We shall look at the historical development of organizations that employ violence, the evolution of doctrines for the use of force, the technological changes and attendant revolutions in military affairs. Our focus will be on the diplomatic interactions and the social, economic, political, and cultural contexts in which they take place. We shall emphasize certain formative conflicts: The Thirty Years’ War, the Wars of Louis XIV, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Wars of German Unification, and the two world wars of the 20th century.
