UACS SFL First and Second Language Acquisition Talk with Native English Speakers

On 2 April 2024, the UACS English language students attending their Contrastive Analysis class this semester, taught by their Dean and Professor, Marjana Vaneva PhD, met with native speakers, part of the Mackenzie family from London, UK, who had been visiting Skopje this past week.

In a nice and relaxing sunny atmosphere in the park, the group discussed the niceties of English, the challenges of learning and the spontaneity of acquiring it, as well as the use of slang and idioms as features of an informal language. These were looked at from the perspectives of native English speakers (the guests) and non-native English speakers (the UACS students), by analyzing the practical implications they have on the language.

Other topics were touched on, especially when it comes to language: how culture determines our communication, how it impacts on our language choices and how people read or misread our messages.
