Psychology Students from University American College Skopje (UACS) Visited World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Skopje

On November 20, 2024, 4th-year students at the UACS Department of Psychology had the remarkable opportunity to visit the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Skopje. They met with Dr. Akeem Ali, Head of the WHO Country Office in Skopje, and a World Health Representative during their visit and discussed the critical role that the WHO—and each of us—provides in strengthening health systems and advancing the broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The students also attended presentations by the WHO National Professional Officers, Ms. Margarita Spasenovska and Ms. Simona Atanasova, who explained how global health policies and frameworks are practically implemented nationally. The visit included engaging debates on topics such as global health, social determinants of health, and mental health. These discussions were particularly valuable for students enrolled in the Clinical Psychology course, led by Assoc. Prof. Dimitrinka Jordanova Peshevska, PhD.

Beyond its educational benefits, the visit also explored ways UACS could support the WHO’s initiatives, particularly in raising awareness around youth mental health, tobacco control, and non-communicable diseases. Students and faculty were encouraged to actively engage in public health advocacy and contribute to improving population health outcomes.
