Linguistics Guest Lecturer from Austria

On 17 April 2019, Dr Agnieszka Bedkowska-Kopczyk, Assistant Professor from the University of Graz, Austria, gave a linguistics guest lecture at the UACS School of Foreign Languages. The presentation (part of her recent study) titled ‘Being moved, touched, shaken: How sensory-motor experience shapes conceptualization of mental states in English and Slavic languages (Evidence from Polish, Slovene, Serbo-Croatian and Macedonian)’ aims to describe a conceptual structure of mental states denoted by these verbs (and their corresponding participles and nouns) by using the methods of Cognitive Linguistics, and the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor in particular.
The students and colleagues who attended the event were presented with challenging examples from all languages subject to analysis in this study, and thought-provoking ideas from the area of Linguistics, all of which made the questions-and-answers session a very engaging and participative part of the lecture.
