Eleventh Annual UACS Reading Competition: Celebrating James Joyce’s Ulysses
Committed to promoting literature among high school students, UACS School of Foreign Languages is organizing the Eleventh Annual Reading Competition. This year’s competition will honor the 100th anniversary of James Joyce’s literary masterpiece Ulysses. Ulysses was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemics the Competition will be organized electronically.
We would like to invite English teachers from Macedonian high schools to participate in this competition with their students. The competition is open to third and fourth-year high school students who can apply to read an excerpt from Ulysses.

Each English teacher can participate with a maximum of two students. Each student should apply as an individual contestant. This year we will not accept group participants/contestants.
Under the mentorship of their teacher, each student should read a selected text and record the reading. The video should not exceed three minutes (the student should introduce him/herself, state the name of the school and the mentor, and read the excerpt). All interested teachers/mentors and students should register and send their application forms and videos in one email (see the application form attached which also includes the general rules, the marking scale and the criteria). In case of more than one contestant, a new application form along with the video should be sent to readingcompetition@uacs.edu.mk by 1 June 2022, 11:59 pm at the latest.
How to participate:
• Record your student/contestant read the chosen excerpt. In the recording, the student should introduce him/herself, state the name of the school and the name of the mentor, and read the selected text. The whole video recording should not exceed three minutes.
• Save the video file with the name and surname of the contestant. The video file should be saved in one of the following formats: MPG, .MP2, .MPEG, .MPE, .MPV, .OGG, MP4, AVI, .WMV, MOV, .QT, FLV, .MKV, .AVCHD. Example: elena_dimova.mpg
• Fill out the attached application form (parts a and b).
• Send the video file along with the application form (parts a and b) in one email to readingcompetition@uacs.edu.mk by 1 June 2022, 11:59 pm at the latest.
• In case there are two contestants, please send their proposals in separate emails following the above instructions.
Special jury will award First, Second and Third Prize.
The winners will be announced by the end of June 2022 at the latest.
The three winners will receive certificates, tuition discounts at UACS, and valuable book awards from our sponsors via post and email. Certificates of participation will be awarded to all students and their teachers via email.
